Marty Brodeur is Not Above Sean Avery

You know, of all the people in the world who I thought might be the mature one -- who might take the high road -- when it comes to a spat with Sean Avery, I thought Marty Brodeur would be on that list. From my distant perspective, he has always seemed like a pretty classy guy. And then, well, he does something small yet significant. He skipped shaking Avery's hand after the Rangers/Devils series ended last night after Game Five. Now, I'm not going to lay into Marty. This isn't anything really significant or world changing. Hell, can you really blame him?

It's just that sometimes, when you least expect it, people don't do what you think they are going to do. I guess I just figured Brodeur was going to take everything in stride, how he had pretty much been doing throughout the series. I figured he wouldn't stoop to Avery's level. But I'm torn here, after all he was dealing with Sean Avery and it's hard to blame him.

Speaking of Seans... I'd also like to add that friend of the blog Sean Leahy has come on board as part of Yahoo! Sports' new hockey blogging extravaganza. Best of luck to Sean and the folks over at Yahoo.

  2. Marty Brodeur is a diving punk. Maybe if he stayed in the net or at least the crease he wouldnt get bumped.....Hey Marty welcome....or should I say farewell to Playoff Hockey!!! Avery did his job....... He got in the opposing team stars head and that makes him as important as Jagr in these playoffs!!!!! Lets Go Rangers!!!!!!!

  3. I haven't seen the overuse of exclamation points like that since the AMP Energy post after the Winter Classic.

...I really do wish that was the last time I seen it. o_O

  7. If you ever read Broduer's comments after just about any loss he doesn't finish his remarks without throwing a teammate under the bus very often. He's never had any class either, he just has the press on his side. TSN would crucify Avery if he did this, Brodeur got off with nothing.

  8. you've got to give respect to get it in return...Avery shows no respect to anyone or any part of the NHL so i dont blame Brodeur not one bit..he's an emberassment to the sport we love and thats a shame.

  9. I don't blame Brodeur one bit. While it pisses me off having my team play against him 8 times a season, he has always been a classy player. But he is only human to say "screw classy" when it comes to how much of a piece of crap Sean Avery is. The guy has done nothing to earn any respect and done everything to lose it. Brodeur showed that he had none for him by not shaking his hand. I wouldn't have either. If Avery wanted a hand shake, she shouldn't have buried himself so many times over and over with his antics.

  10. How can anyone possibly say Brodeur has any class? If he looses it is ALWAYS someone else's fault or a lucky bounce, he never takes responsbility for screwing up. If Brodeur had any class whatsoever he would of shaken Avery's hand because that would have been taking the high road, the right thing to do, showing children how to handle the situation, promoted good sportsmanship and would of showed class but Brodeur didn't he pulled a stunt that so many would put Avery down for but that antic is ok because its a guy who slept with his wife's sister, yeah that is CLASSY. And for all the Avery bashers, you would LOVE to have Avery on your team, he aggitates, gets into star players heads, draws more pentalites than he takes, passes good, and scores goals. Everyone wanted to make a big fuss out of him standing in front of Broduers face but noone talked about the goals he scored before the incident even happened. People and the media just love to harp on one guy, but i don't see any articles about Brodeur diving or throwing punches (not just at avery) or using his stick to take wacks at opposing players but i guess that is ok as long as it is not Sean Avery doing it. The NHL needs to look a bit more closely at other people in this league instead of concentrating on only one guy it makes them look foolish and incompetant.

  11. As a lifelong Devils fan, it's hard for me to be objective here, but I will say this much -- when a guy (Avery) crosses the lines that he does and talks about Brodeur's family on the ice, that shows not only a lack of respect for the game, but a complete lack of respect for the player. In that instance, I do not expect Brodeur to congratulate him on a hard-fought season/playoffs with a handshake. Avery's been yapping at Brodeur for 5 years about his divorce, something that was very public and I imagine very difficult to go through so publicly, especially with 4 kids. That, to me, is classless and that kind of person deserves nobody's respect. You would never see a Devils player saying that kind of crap. If they did, I imagine they wouldn't be in Devils uniforms long. The Rangers can keep him. He belongs there.
